What is IEEE Future Directions SpaceTech?
IEEE Future Directions SpaceTech seeks to advance technology in support of humanity’s expansion into space. It provides a platform for investors, academic, government, and industry professionals to share innovations and foster the collaboration needed to drive the next generation of space research, production and operations.
Opportunities
The IEEE SpaceTech initiative seeks to address several key focus areas across the expanding space domain:
- Enhancing Cross-Sector Alignment: Expanding humanity’s footprint in space presents a major opportunity to strengthen synergy between entrepreneurs, industry, government, and research institutions across R&D, production, and operations. As commercial and governmental momenta accelerate—from the Artemis mission’s lunar capabilities to a commercial orbital ecosystem exceeding $100B/year—unified collaboration will be vital to sustaining growth.
- Harmonizing Ecosystem Timelines and Standards: Startups and commercial players navigate complex supply chain requirements, regulatory frameworks, and launch lead times alongside evolving funding cycles. Bridging development timelines (e.g., target 18-month mission cycles) and establishing adaptable, robust component standards will help streamline cash flows, accelerate development, and strengthen space R&D projects. As an independent convener of standards, IEEE can ensure open standards that define component and system compatibility
- Unifying IEEE Expertise: IEEE is uniquely positioned to bring together the rich, diverse technical capabilities distributed across its various councils and societies into a cohesive, collaborative effort dedicated to advancing space technologies.
Taking these challenges into consideration, this initiative will streamline efforts through the following steps:
- Support standards development and entrepreneurship to help level the playing field for small businesses and streamline R&D and production
- Advocate to government space agencies to accelerate R&D sponsorship.
- Educate policy makers on challenges and space technology solutions
- Lead effort to establish universal trajectory policies and and standards, including for satellite end of life.
- Institute a database of international contacts within the space ecosystem and establish communication protocols between governments and businesses.
- Promote space as a neutral environment and develop guidelines on the ethical use of space ecosystems.
- Launch the SpaceTech webinar series to educate space and tech enthusiasts about the initiative, it’s mission and objectives
- Consolidate IEEE space-related technical expertise to simplify and augment its interaction with industries
